Referral Management Service

About Health is a forerunner in high quality referral management delivering NHS services nationally since 2014. To date, we have developed bespoke services for 5 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) providing a Rapid Specialist Opinion Service that aims to facilitate all referrals into specialist health services, and ensure patients are seen by the right person, with the right skills, at the right time. We currently triage over 60,000 referrals per annum, across 16 different clinical specialities. 16 Clinical Specialities Triaged

  • Cardiology Colorectal Surgery
  • Dermatology ENT
  • Gastroenterology General Surgery
  • Gynaecology Nephrology
  • Neurology Ophthalmology
  • Orthopaedics Plastic Surgery
  • Respiratory Medicine Rheumatology
  • Urology Vascular Surgery

Our team comprises skilled administrators who receive and review referrals from local GP practices via the National NHS e-referral platform (e-RS) and allocate them to a consultant in one of our specialities. The success of our approach rests on our ability to provide a Rapid Specialist Opinion Service via our consultants. We work collaboratively with clinical colleagues to ensure that every referral receives a positive outcome, not only ensuring the referral is correct for the named service, but also providing:

  • Clinical reasoning where an alternative service, such as an appointment with a GPwER may be a better option
  • Advice to GPs on how to support the patient
  • Signposting and re-direction guidance for incorrect referrals

Our Rapid Specialist Opinion Service has been designed to be operational within a four-week period, including collaboration with local specialist services to ensure clinical contacts in each service to support onward referral. By using e-RS we remove the need for up-front costs associated with new software requirements; minimising financial risk to CCGs. e-RS also provides referrers with a familiar platform, with little or no additional training required to direct referrals to our service. The ability to add, or remove, specialities provides us with total flexibility to meet local needs and deliver a tailored service for each of the CCGs we work with. The combination of these two elements ensures that referrers always have access to feedback and advice from the specialist consultants who are triaging their referrals.
